A WORLD OF OUR OWN

By Lyall Brooks

Close the door, light the light; we’re stayin’ home tonight. – The Seekers

IN DEVELOPMENT

Created by Lab Kelpie’s Artistic Director Lyall Brooks, A World of Our Own is a new solo performance piece exploring the dichotomy of social isolation often inherent in lifelong monogamous relationships.

A deeply personal work with resonating universal themes, A World of Our Own is inspired by the idyllic lyrics of The Seekers song of the same name and informed by people’s experiences in long-term, childless relationships.

We want to ask the uncomfortable question: why should we invest fully and completely into a relationship, if the return is likely to be inconsolable grief?

Told through the eyes of a man whose terminally ill wife has just died halfway through their journey across Australia, A World of Our Own will explore this love/time investment strategy by weaving laterally through topics as diverse as astronomy, mammalian sociology, Australian geography… and the right way to gut a fish.

Creative Development of this work was supported by the Bluestone Church Arts Space and Maribyrnong City Council in February 2018.
